FlexRadio – SDR beautifully simple

FlexRadio from Austin, TX (USA) is a company that has been developing and selling SDR-based (Software Defined Radio) radios since 2003. The basis was initially the open source 'PowerSDR' concept, which was developed by the world's leading radio amateurs. Based on this, the hardware platform as well as the software was further developed and today forms the product range of one of the leading manufacturers for this class of radios.

FlexRadio's current transceivers are controlled either by a computer, a fixed front panel ('M' models) and/or a remote control unit ('Maestro'). In addition to the excellent RF characteristics, the simple commissioning and setup of the radios plays an important role in the development. In keeping with FlexRadio's slogan: SDR - beautifully simple.

FlexRadio FLEX-6400 / FLEX-6400M

6400The FLEX-6400/6400M is a 100W HF transceiver for the shortwave bands from 160 to 10m, plus the 6m band. Two completely independent receivers are available, an important prerequisite to work DX in split mode or to observe other bands and modes during a contest. Full duplex crossband operation is also possible.

The receivers are designed as direct sampling SDR receivers. A sampling rate of 122.8 MHz is used, the AD converter has a word size of 16 bits. This results in an excellent RMDR value of 115 dB (at 2 kHz distance). As a visible result of this high-end digital technology, the user has a spectrum width of up to 7 MHz, more than sufficient to observe several amateur radio bands simultaneously. The frequency range of the receiver is from 30 kHz to 54 MHz, the transmitter is limited to the amateur radio bands. The preselector with 3-pole band filters provides a very good large signal selectivity. A low-noise oscillator contributes significantly to the good receiver data. For exceptionally high requirements a 10 MHz reference clock input is available, which can be driven by an optional GPSDO. For friends of VHF bands, a transverter output and an RX input are available, enabling operation on higher bands with an external transverter.

The transmitter of the FLEX-6400/FLEX-6400M offers 100W transmit power (PEP, 25W AM), the suppression of unwanted by-products is better than 60dBc. The transverter output can be set from 0 to +10 dBm. The transmitter is limited to the amateur radio bands provided in the respective region. An optional antenna tuner can automatically correct mismatches up to 3:1 SWR (ATU option).

As with all FlexRadio transceivers, the main focus is on easy to handle remote control. The FLEX-6400 can be operated with any Windows PC, iPhone or iPad. In addition, the Maestro console is available which can access the transceiver via WLAN or wired Ethernet. The 'SmartSDR' software in version 3 offers a special feature: The 'multiFlex' function offers the possibility to use a transceiver of the 6000 series with a second user at the same time. This makes 'Multi-Op/Single-Radio' operation very easy, even over long distances.

FLEX-6400M

6400MThe FLEX-6400M model offers all of the above mentioned features and is additionally equipped with a front panel. This makes the migration to SDR technology particularly easy, as the transceiver feels like a classic shortwave radio, but uses the latest digital technology internally.

The control panel is equipped with a brillant touch screen with 1920x1200 pixels resolution. A wide range of functions can be accessed via this screen, such as frequency setting or selecting the operating mode. The traditional controls are intentionally placed at large distances on the front panel for easy and clear operation even in hectic contest situations. The fact that almost all of these buttons have only one function contributes to the very clear and easy to learn operation of Flexradio transceivers.

Remote Operations

Every FlexRadio model - with or without front panel - can be easily remote controlled. The following options are available:

  • SmartSDR Software on Windows-PC
  • SmartSDR for IOS on iPhone or iPad
  • Maestro Console

This remote control can be done via the local network in a building, but also via the Internet from a great distance. No matter where you are - you can still work that rare DX station from your own station when you are sitting in the hotel! With the latest version V3 of the SmartSDR software it is even possible to operate a transceiver with two remote operators at the same time. Any mix of the above mentioned devices can be used - a PC, iPhone/iPad or the Maestro console.

FlexRadio FLEX-6600 / FLEX-6600M New

6600With the FLEX-6600, FlexRadio offers a shortwave transceiver with greater computing power. The result is twice as many digital audio channels called 'DAX', a doubled sampling rate for the AD converter (244 instead of 122 MS/s) and thus a doubled spectrum width in the waterfall display: 14 instead of 7 MHz. This makes multiFlex operation with two users even more convenient, as the 6600 series transceivers also have two independent transmitters. In addition, the band filters are more selective, now using 7th order filters (6400: 3rd order). The number of independent receivers has also been increased from 2 to 4. In contrast to the 6400 series, the 6600/6600M has an automatic antenna tuner installed. This tuner adapts a SWR of up to 3:1. Due to the double design of the 'Spectrum Capture Units' (SCU), even diversity reception is possible, i.e. the automatic selection of an antenna input based on the signal level, with two different antennas.

All other parameters are the same as for the 6400: 100W transmit power with -60 dBc reduction of unwanted emissions (25 W in AM), all bands from 160m to 6m, all modes, the same excellent RMDR value of 115 dB @ 2kHz, etc. The remote control options are also identical: Whether Windows PC with the SmartSDR software, IOS for iPhone or iPad, or the Maestro console - everything is suitable for remote control of the FlexRadio transceivers of the 6600 series.

This transceiver is available as a 'BlackBox' without front panel - the model 6600. The model 6600M has a front panel control unit with 8" touch display.

FlexRadio 'Maestro' Console New

Maestro Front ViewImagine that - you are sitting comfortably in the shadow in your garden, a cool drink right beside you, and on the table is the wireless FlexRadio 'Maestro' console. You watch the band on the large LC display, the waterfall shows every detail. Then - the long awaited DX station is here! You reach for the keys or the microphone without getting up and work the DX. The actual transceiver sits in the shack together with the power amplifier and all wired accessories and does the hard work. That's FlexRadio - SDR beautifully simple.

The Maestro console is a wireless control unit for all FlexRadio transceivers. Communication with the transceiver takes place via the network, either locally or via the Internet halfway around the world. Either WLAN or a wired Ethernet connection can be used. The large 8" WXGA (1280x800 pixels) IPS display shows the spectrum and the waterfall in razor sharp detail, so you won't miss a single signal. The generously arranged buttons and controls allow convenient and error-free operation of the radio. And if things get late on the terrace or in the garden, the backlit controls also help.

The Maestro console simultaneously displays two VFOs with spectrum and waterfall. Microphone and button are connected at the back. The power supply is via a 13.8V cable or a LiIon battery (not included). All other connections are also located on the back, so the operating position remains neat and tidy. And if you always want to have the Mestro console with you, there is an optional transport bag and dust protection, so the control unit can come with you, even on your holiday or business trip.
